Learning to Fly Hot Air Balloons Overview Learning to fly a hot air balloon is an exciting and rewarding experience! At Adventure Balloons NZ, we provide hands-on training to help you reach your goal — from your very first flight all the way to becoming a qualified commercial pilot. Training Requirements Initial (Private Flying) Training Expect around 15–20 hours of flight time to reach solo flying standard. Includes ground school to learn about: Aviation law Weather and navigation basics Currently, there is no official Private Pilot Licence for Balloons (PPLB) in New Zealand. However, training to this level allows you to: Fly solo Fly with non-paying passengers (friends and family) Build flight hours towards your Commercial Pilot Licence (CPLB) for more information please email.
